What I see is a combination of small errors that combine. The chosen Aperture should have given adequate DOF for this portrait, but if you look, you will see that the left eye of the Cat looks to be a bit softer than the rest of the cat, which is softer than your Son’s face. This could be as the result of a slight focus error.

The lighting on the left is quite bright on the shoulder and the cat to the point that there is no detail in the shirt and fur. The light falloff is very evident lower down on the left. My eye keeps getting drawn to the bottom lip as it is a “hot spot”. These 2 things indicate some over-exposure.

You may have been able to get away with the lighting inf your Son’s top had been non-white, and this would also provided some contrast to the white fur of the Cat.

Your son has a very expressive face that is totally in contrast to his cat. The cat looks like it does not want to be there! You have positioned Your son above the cat, indicating he has power over, but the expressions tell us otherwise.

Technicalities aside the photo of your child and his pet is something that the family will cherish.
