And So We Move To Warmer Climes…

Well, we’ve certainly been threatening to do it for some time now. That time has finally come and we can officially announce that XtremeCamera, and each and every staff member of XtremeCamera, are now full time residents of the state of Florida.

OMG! What have we done?

Well, to begin with we believed we were headed to a state that cost a whole lot less to live in than the state of New Hampshire. Rents are cheaper, but wages are lower, so relocating our business to Florida made sense if we were not concerned with the local wages, and we weren’t. That said, things are not that cut and dried. There have been some unforeseen “things” that have tarnished our plans a bit.

In getting ourselves up and running in the new digs for XtremeCamera offices we’ve had to shop in more than a dozen local stores. To our horror we’ve found that the local Wal-Mart is more expensive than the Hannaford store in Concord, New Hampshire, and that when you throw in a 6.5% sales tax on just about everything you suddenly realize that what you thought was true just isn’t. And while it is true that most rent is lower in Florida than in New Hampshire there can be no doubt that the quality of the construction, and the quality of appliances and fixtures used in apartments and office space is so low that it feels like everything was made as cheaply as it could be. To put it bluntly, we think we might have screwed up, but we’re hoping that it’s too soon to tell.

Lower costs were only one part of the equation when deciding to move however. There were, and still are, other things to consider. We came down to Florida because of the weather, a major issue for some of us. Winter is a time of hibernation and there isn’t much going on outside unless you’re into winter sports.

Naturally, creating photographs on the spur of the moment is difficult unless you’re one of those people that loves being in the cold weather and can work the camera dials with gloves on. But, the biggest reason for a change of climate and scenery is that while most of us have grown up with mountain views and fall colors, we believed the ocean views and the pastel colored buildings and palm trees would offer a real kick to our creative parts. From what we can tell so far that much is very true, but how long will it be before we grow tired of the palm trees and sandy beaches and long for the glorious red and yellow leaves of autumn and snow covered mountain peaks? We wonder.

Lastly, our publisher, the man responsible for talking us into making the move, believes that his own personal work will get the boost it needs from the tan bikini clad women of Florida, and the warmer temperatures soothing his arthritic joints. Again, we’ll see.

We’ve been here exactly a week. The scouting party, Julia and Steven, has been here about a month, locking up locations, apartments and offices, so we haven’t had much time to take it all in. Tomorrow (March 1st) we begin the official first workweek in Florida. We’re lining up some great reviews, and Julia and John are working on locations and models for their respective gallery work. And because the weather is much more conducive to being outside we’re going to post more content on the site than ever before, hoping to give our readers a feel for what its like to live here.

If you are a model and would like to work with Julia or John on some upcoming projects please email us and let us know. We’re located north of Palm Beach, but will be traveling from Miami to Vero Beach for our photographic and video projects.

If you are a writer or a photographer living in Florida and wish to join our team email us with samples of your work. If you are invited to join to the team the perks are terrific.

PS: One thing is certain, boss-man plans to find out where Burn Notice is filmed and head down there to photograph the goings-on and perhaps get an interview with the stars!
