A True "Every" Tool We Can All Use - The iPad
August 29, 2010
On March 12th, despite recent financial setbacks the like of which we’ve never experienced before, every staff member of XtremeCamera placed his and her preorder for the Apple iPad as fast as they could whip out their credit and debit cards.
No doubt that in the future there will be other tablet-like devices similar in form and function to Apple’s iPad, and no doubt that for some people those devices might be a better fit. But right now, and for the foreseeable future, the Apple iPad is such an incredibly worthy product that the people who own, myself included, are rarely, if ever, without it. I don’t know about you but I was a bit surprised how often I find myself reaching for my iPad, no matter what it was I was doing. Continue Reading
Mastering Filters for Photography - Book Review
January 14, 2010
We receive books covering every aspect of photography, whether film based or strictly digital, and whether or not it covers the camera/lens end of photography or the computer/software end. We love receiving the titles, and for the most part there are terrific bits of information in the books we receive. And sometimes, like this title, we receive a book that qualifies as a “vital” part of a serious photographers library. Continue Reading
A Julian Lennon Comeback? Let’s Hope so…
December 16, 2009
When it comes to the children of the beloved John Lennon there can be no doubt that John’s firstborn, Julian, was born with more than his share of the Lennon ‘looks’, voice, mannerisms, and yes, talent. That’s not to say John’s younger son Sean isn’t talented as well, but Sean seems to lack direction, dedication, and focus. Sean seems to be a momma’s boy (but in a good way), whereas Julian has had a much tougher time in 46 years. Continue Reading
XtremeCamera is back online after 4-day MIA
December 6, 2009Apologies all around. XtremeCamera is back online after an unexpected failure of the hosting company that has served as our co-location host for the past 6 years. Our servers are under lock and key and it will be months before we get them back, if ever. We’re not even sure we can find the receipts for the many parts that made up our custom, DIY Linux boxes we sent to the company over the years. In any case, we’ve joined up with Network Solutions with a dedicated server and we hope it will suffice until things settle down.
Please note that our last backup was dated November 14th, 2009 so anything posted in the blogs, in the reviews and opinions, in the galleries (all galleries), will need to be reposted. Since we’re now more than 65GB in size as a gzip file it just didn’t make sense to do more frequent backups remotely. In the future we’ll know better; you can never be sure who is next to go belly up.
Once again, we apologize to our members, our readers, and our clients for being MIA these past 4 days.

Adobe CS5 Overview - A worthy upgrade
August 29, 2010
It’s been a mere 18 months since Adobe began shipping Creative Suite 4, a superb upgrade over the previous version. My own workflow saw a vast improvement when I adopted all the software titles of the CS Master Collection, especially when I added Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 to the overall workflow. So, to be honest, when Adobe announced Creative Suite 5 I wasn’t sure I needed to spend the money upgrading Continue Reading

Titillation Or Information? Which Photo Magazines Are Worth Your Time & Money?
February 2, 2010
All photography magazines are expensive these days. In truth, all magazines in all genres are expensive these days and if you enjoy reading them you can drop some serious coin every Tuesday at your local bookstore. Having said that, buying a subscription to a magazine is, most of the time, vastly less costly that purchasing single issues each week/month. In today’s unstable times subscriptions can be a great idea and a great way to save money. Continue Reading
