And So We Move To Warmer Climes…

Can five New Englanders from New Hampshire and Vermont pull up stakes in the dead of winter and head down to South Florida to begin anew? Can these five brave souls leave the familiarity of home, friends, and family, for the good of the company and be happy with their new, upside down lives? Maybe, maybe not. But we did it. We’re here in South Florida (just north of Palm Beach actually) to reinvigorate our creative natures, photograph the local scenery and beautiful people, and to learn to kick back and take things easy.

This is going to be an adventure. Continue Reading

Mastering Filters for Photography - Book Review

We receive books covering every aspect of photography, whether film based or strictly digital, and whether or not it covers the camera/lens end of photography or the computer/software end. We love receiving the titles, and for the most part there are terrific bits of information in the books we receive. And sometimes, like this title, we receive a book that qualifies as a “vital” part of a serious photographers library.

A Julian Lennon Comeback? Let’s Hope so…

When it comes to the children of the beloved John Lennon there can be no doubt that John’s firstborn, Julian, was born with more than his share of the Lennon ‘looks’, voice, mannerisms, and yes, talent. That’s not to say John’s younger son Sean isn’t talented as well, but Sean seems to lack direction, dedication, and focus. Sean seems to be a momma’s boy (but in a good way), whereas Julian has had a much tougher time in 46 years. Continue Reading

Titillation Or Information? Which Photo Magazines Are Worth Your Time & Money?

All photography magazines are expensive these days. In truth, all magazines in all genres are expensive these days and if you enjoy reading them you can drop some serious coin every Tuesday at your local bookstore. Having said that, buying a subscription to a magazine is, most of the time, vastly less costly that purchasing single issues each week/month. In today’s unstable times subscriptions can be a great idea and a great way to save money. Continue Reading

NIK Software – Viveza 2 – Fast, Powerful And Unafraid

NIK Software specifically gears their software toward the photographer and not the digital illustrator. Each plugin or plugin suite created by NIK Software are powerful tools that every digital photographer would be wise to have in their virtual tool belt. With the release of Viveza 2 NIK continues the tradition of making dramatic improvements with each new upgrade and each new product, while providing competitive pricing and affordable upgrade paths. With Viveza 2 in your arsenal you’ll make an investment in your career that you can’t afford not to make. I was a fan of Viveza v1 and didn’t expect to be blown away by a new version. That said, the new features and improvements on past features were way beyond my expectations. I think you’ll agree that NIK Software has once again given the photographer a great postproduction tool. Continue Reading

The Elegance of Mary McCartney’s Photography

McCartney is a photographer with indelible taste and ‘almost royal’ elegance. It was not happenstance or her “name” that provoked Tony and Cherie Blair to choose her to create the very first photographs of their newborn son, Leo. It was something that seemed a natural choice for the Blair’s after they became familiar with McCartney’s work. Continue Reading

Wacom Intuos4 Tablet & Digital Photography Postproduction

If you are a digital photographer, amateur or professional, if you own and use an image editing program like Adobe Photoshop, and if you perform your own post production work then a Wacom tablet doesn’t just make sense, it is an imperative investment into your work. Without a Wacom tablet your post work will never achieve the level of accuracy it deserves.

The Bamboo Pen & Touch, which Julia reviewed, would make a great first tablet or simply a great tablet if your budget was small or your needs were more generalized than that of a professional photographer doing his or her own postproduction work on a computer workstation. With much higher sensitivity, more precise controls, and several more features the intuos4 outshines anything else on the market right now. So, let’s have a look. Continue Reading
